Terrazas del sol is ideally situated 375 meters from the beach at Playa Prieta, a pristine Costa Rica Beach. There is abundant shopping and dining nearby in Playa Potrero and Playa Flamingo. There are two super markets right on the town square in Potrero and under a kilometer. There is also a very pleasant spot for a drink and a taco on the beach called Las Brisas. Down the road in the other direction you'll find the Sugar Beach Hotel at Playa Pan de Azucar. This is a good place for a meal or a drink. You can walk there on the beach as well. Further along the road has been improved and one can now drive to Zopotal. This area is undergoing development now and there are several large resorts in the early stages of development. This road now leads to the Monkey Trail now and deposits you just past the Monkey Trail Canopy Tour. There is a new road planned called the Ox Cart Trail that will be a more direct route to Zopotal. Costa Rica Family VacationsDriving directions from Liberia & the Liberia Daniel Oduber International Airport to Playa Potrero, Playa Flamingo, Playa Brasilito, Playa pan de Azucar, Sugar Beach, Playa Grande and Playa Tamarindo as well as driving directions between Liberia, Playa del Coco, Papagayo and Ocotal to Potrero and points south over the Monkey Trail. Guanacaste, Costa Rica Map showing driving directions between Liberia & Potrero. Highway Route: About 75 Kilometers. Approximately 1 hour; more the first time. Follow SOUTH route on Map. Well Marked, follow signs to Filadelfia, Belin, Brasilito, Flamingo, Playa Potrero & Playa la Penca & Playa Pan de Azucar. Note: The highway route from the Liberia airport to Potrero is advised for squeamish folk uncomfortable with fording rivers and short on their four wheel drive experiences. This cautionary statement does not apply to rednecks, rally drivers and uncategorized lunatics. From the Liberia International Airport: turn Right from the airport entrance on Rt. 21 and Continue South through Comunidad to Belin. The Road between the airport and Belin is well paved and passes through sugar cane farms and there are small towns along the way. You'll find abundant places to stop for a cold drink and snacks. Caution; Costa Ricans' drive like maniacs! They also have a habit of walking along the edge of the road. Belin is a well marked and busy three way intersection. You'll see a new commercial strip with gas station on the Southwest corner. Turn Right and follow signs to Flamingo, Huacas and Tamarindo. Huacas is a small commercial area at the base of a hill that you will have just descended. At Huacas continue straight, passing the left turn to Playa Tamarindo and take the next right turn and follow signs to Brasilito, Flamingo and Playa Potrero. At Brasilito, follow main road to Flamingo, slow down for the speed bumps and follow the road as it takes a 90 degree right turn. On the right you'll see the Happy Snapper Restaurant. In a few miles, as you drive into Playa Flamingo pay attention and you will see a gentle turn to the right onto a busy unpaved road. There is a sign for Playa Potrero. If you arrive at the head of Potrero Bay where the road makes a sharp left turn; you just passed the turn to Potrero. This road generally skirts the Potrero bay counter clockwise. See this map link for local area detail: http://flamingo-map.com/printmaps.php Follow the signs to Playa Potrero and Sugar Beach aka Playa Pan de Azucar as you pass through Surf Side. You will arrive at a T intersection where you turn Left and cross a very small bridge and arrive at the Potrero Plaza complete with the prerequisite Costa Rica soccer field. Somewhere in the constitution it is codified that for a town to receive a name and tax revenue, it must have a soccer field. There is good store here and another around the corner to the left. Also around the corner to the left is Las Brisas, a quaint sea side restaurant and a good place for a taco and beer. Wednesday night is ladies night at Las Brisas and hundreds of Ticos & Ticas flock there to dance. At the end of the soccer field take a Right There is a church and another sign for Sugar Beach. On the left you'll pass a road to La Penca, a favorite beach. There is a large construction project here as well. Just past this, you'll see a turn to the left marked with numerous signs, Turn Left. Following this road & you'll notice lots of new construction and a small road on the left; this is the road to Playa Prieta. In a few hundred yards, just past a gated entrance on your left TURN RIGHT into Sunset Hills. It is easy to miss so be on the look out for the gated entrance on the left 15 meters before Sunset Hills. There is new a three story condo project on the corner lot and just past it you'll see a drive to the left, take this left. The last driveway on your left in the entrance to Terrazas del Sol. Pull in and park. If by accident you pass the entrance into Sunset Hills you will see my house and know to turn around. Well marked follow signs from airport south to Comunidad Right to Sardinal, Left onto Monkey Trail, Left at Nuevo Colon, stay right entering into Potrero, turn right at church and go 300 feet, turn left toward Sugar Beach (see signs), turn right into Sunset Hills, go 75 feet and turn left onto small drive, turn left in 150 feet down driveway at house. Honk car horn and Roger will great you. Driving the Monkey Trail between Sardinal and Playa Potrero can be unsettling during a heavy rain. There is a river crossing that usually is 4 inches of water but can become 4 feet at the wrong moments. If your not sure, stop and ask a local. Also, the traffic is a good indicator. Follow NORTH Route on Map. Remember to set the Odometer to 0.0 at 1st turn, just past Sardinal. From the Airport in Liberia head South toward Flamingo. Pass the "DO-IT Center" on Right in a few kilometers take a well marked Right turn for Playa Coco at a Right only T intersection. There is a Total Gas Station on the left at this intersection. There is sometimes a speed trap on this section of road the MAX is 60KPH. Where the road begins to curve you will see Sardinal, a small town to the left where the road takes a hard sweeping Right. Stay to the Right. There is a good gas station to stop for refreshments here on the left. In a few Kilometers you will come upon a very large billboard on the Right for Lomas del Mar. On the left, there is an large unpaved road. Stop and set the odometer to ZERO. Take this left and follow this road until you come upon a soccer field on the left. There is sign with a map of the area at this left turn. After this left follow this road until you come upon a Y in the road. Stay to the Left and put the vehicle into 4-wheel drive before the stream, to play it safe. SLOWLY cross the stream, it is only a few inches deep, unless it is raining hard. There are two paths through the stream, to the left you cross the stream and them up a small hill and back down to the stream, to the right you stay in the stream the whole way. Either route is safe and the whole thing is about 20 meters long. Continue on and you will pass the main entrance for the Canopy Tour on your right just after the stream. There is a magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean and the Potrero Bay at exactly 12.3 Kilometers. The road becomes a bit more challenging for the next 2 kilometers, take is easy and you'll be fine. You'll descend from a ridge and the road becomes level again. At 14.2 Kilometers you'll cross another small creek, here you may safely turn off the 4 wheel drive and conserve some fuel. At 16.4 Kilometers you come upon a turn in the road with a sign for Sugar Beach, stay to the Right. You have just entered Potrero. For reference, my house is the last house before Sugar Beach aka Playa Pan de Azucar, and if ever lost just ask for directions to Sugar Beach, it is well know. At 16.7 Kilometers you will pass the Marco Polo on your right, FYI excellent restaurant and one of my local favorites. The road takes a 90 degree left and continues past a bizarre development enclosed in chain link fence with razor wire; so inviting! At 17.3 kilometers there is a left turn, stay to the Right and continue straight. You'll cross a small bridge and arrive at the Potrero Plaza complete with the prerequisite Costa Rica soccer field.
